*** Preliminary Itinerary ***

Commemorate the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death as Leipzig’s great Gewandhaus Orchestra dedicates its entire Spring Festival to his music, before enjoying two further performances over four nights in Dresden

OVERVIEW

Optimising the proximity of Saxony’s two great cities – Leipzig & Dresden – Limelight Arts Travel’s Beethoven Bicentenary tour focuses on the central two weeks of May 2027, beginning with eight nights in Leipzig before four nights in Dresden.

The city of Leipzig, which is musically centred around its Gewandhaus Orchestra, one of the oldest and most revered orchestras in Europe, offers a beautifully-curated opening week of performances, with an opening concert featuring Beethoven’s superb Incidental Music for Goethe’s tragedy, Egmont. That first week also includes five symphonies and two concertos, as well as a delightful selection of chamber music – including string quartets and two of the early multiple-instrument chamber music pieces – as well as piano sonatas, and another rarely-performed work, the Choral Fantasy.

The chief conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra is Andris Nelsons, whose contract has recently been extended, for the third time, to July 2032. Soloists include the superb Leonidas Kavakos for the Violin Concerto, Lang Lang for the Third Piano Concerto, and the great Igor Levit, for a fine evening piano recital.

The tour also offers excursions to Halle, Weimar, Meissen, Graupa & Pillnitz. Select group dining experiences, as well as the comfort of our centrally-located hotel in Leipzig, within walking distance of the Gewandhaus, enhance your enjoyment of the tour experience.
