Discover the cosmopolitan cultures of Central Europe and their remarkable histories, from medieval Krakow to royal Budapest and delightful Prague

OVERVIEW

Central Europe has long been more than a cultural crossroads: numerous peoples have settled there, creating a melting pot of surprising and unique cultures. This tour takes you on a journey into the region and its heritage, from Krakow to Budapest and Prague, showcasing each city’s role in a fascinating shared history of a Europe that Slavic, Magyar, Germanic and Jewish cultures called home.

We begin the tour in Krakow, once the capital of a powerful medieval kingdom of Poland that defended Europe from the Ottomans, whose UNESCO World Heritage-listed castles, churches and streetscapes preserve this glorious history. We then travel south across the stunning landscapes of the High Tatras Mountains, discovering a unique alpine culture that has preserved its traditional arts and crafts to this day. We then explore Budapest over five nights, from historic synagogues and mineral-rich thermal baths, to wonderful collections at the Museum of Fine Arts and Ludwig Museum of modern art. We follow the Danube to Bratislava, an unexpectedly charming European capital, and then on to Prague, a former capital of the Habsburg empire which has long preserved its distinctive Bohemian identity in its art and architecture.

Throughout the tour we enjoy unexpected masterpieces, from Da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine to the neo-Moorish architecture of Budapest’s Neolog synagogues, the ship-shaped Danubiana museum of Bratislava, and the extraordinary UNESCO-listed landscape of Lednice-Valtice in Southern Czechia.

The tour is rounded out by select fine dining, background talks and commentary of your tour leader.
