
EMILY WAKELING
Emily Wakeling is an Australian art writer and curator who has lived and worked in Tokyo, London and across Australia.
Emily holds a MPhil in Art History from the University of Queensland, with a thesis positioning Japanese literary and gender studies within global feminist art. As a Monbukagakusho scholarship recipient, she continued her studies in contemporary Japanese art at Sophia University, Tokyo. During her time living in Tokyo she taught contemporary and historical art history as an adjunct professor at Kanagawa University and Joshibi University of Art and Design, and edited the online bilingual art guide Tokyo Art Beat.
She is Curator at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, having previously held positions at Rockhampton Museum of Art, Artspace Mackay, and the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s Asian and Pacific curatorium for the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Emily’s cross-cultural curatorial projects are spread across Japan and Australia, including Australian artists in Tokyo art spaces, and Japanese artists in Australia. Emily is also a long-serving freelance writer who has contributed to international art journals and publications.
Emily is a passionate arts advocate who enjoys bringing her curatorial experience and art historical knowledge to public audiences via lectures, tours, interviews and webinars.
