Dr SOPHIE OOSTERWIJK

Dr Sophie Oosterwijk was born in Gouda (Netherlands). She has two doctorates in art history (Leicester) and English literature (Leiden), and is well known for her expertise in medieval, Flemish and Dutch art and culture.

Her special research focus is on commemoration and death, in particular the Dance of Death on which she is a leading authority with numerous publications, including three co-edited volumes to date. She was editor of the journal Church Monuments and is now Vice President of The Church Monuments Society.

Sophie previously taught art history at the universities of Leicester, Manchester and St Andrews. She has now been working for many years as a guest lecturer and art tour leader for the University of Cambridge, ArtsNational, the National Trust and other organisations.

Sophie is multilingual and enjoys travel and leading art tours in Europe, in particular in Belgium and the Netherlands where she is very much at home. Her lively lectures in person and online are both entertaining and informative, and have won her praise from across the world.
