COPENHAGEN TO BERLIN: OPERAS & ORCHESTRAS
20 APRIL – 02 MAY 2027
clive paget
Join Limelight’s Clive Paget on an extraordinary musical journey through four of Europe’s great cultural capitals – Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Dresden and Berlin – and enjoy premieres, rarely-performed works and world-class opera
OVERVIEW
Join Limelight magazine’s Editor-at-Large Clive Paget on a musical journey through great European cultural capitals, enjoying masterworks of opera and orchestral performance in a curated program of music and touring.
The tour program features eight performances, including Wagner’s Das Rheingold in Frankfurt and Barrie Kosky directing Strauss’s Die Fledermaus in Copenhagen as well as Handel’s Semele in Berlin. There are also lesser-known works from great composers, from Humperdinck’s rarely performed Königskinder to Paër’s early opera Leonora – the inspiration for Beethoven’s Fidelio – and Elgar’s deeply moving Dream of Gerontius. The settings, too, are of the highest calibre: Copenhagen’s striking waterfront Opera House, the historic Semperoper in Dresden and Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, as well as two operas in Frankfurt’s critically acclaimed Opernhaus.
The musical program is complemented by a thoughtful program of sightseeing. In Copenhagen, a cruise situates the Opera House in its context, along with guided tours of the Amalienborg Palace, and Glyptotek, with its excellent collection of antiquities. Frankfurt offers a wealth of museums – the Städel, with its works by Vermeer, Botticelli, Monet and Munch – and there is the opportunity to survey the newly-renovated institutions of Berlin’s Museum Island. We also call in at Mainz, to visit the Gutenberg Museum, and Eisenach, the birthplace of JS Bach.
A highlight of the tour is Clive Paget’s expertise: his talks and post-performance debriefs enhance your understanding and appreciation of the musical program.

Originally the private collection of Danish Kings, gifted to the people with the introduction of democracy in the mid-1800s, the royal collection features Danish and international art from the past seven centuries and is famed for its assemblage of works from the Danish Golden Age. After free time for lunch we visit the nearby Glyptotek, which displays a fine collection of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, as well as Danish and French art and sculpture of the nineteenth century. Clive gives a pre-performance talk in the hotel before we attend the Koncerthuset for Elgar’s monumental choral and orchestral masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius, set to John Henry Newman’s poem exploring themes of mortality and the afterlife. His moveable type printing press triggered a revolution in media that is still evident today, as we appreciate on our guided tour of the Gutenberg Museum. We view a replica of the Gutenberg Press and the museum’s greatest treasures, two original Gutenberg Bibles from the fifteenth century. After free time for lunch, we visit St Stephen’s Church. Heavily damaged in World War II, the Gothic church was rebuilt with nine brightly coloured stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.
