A Closer Look: Episode 41 - An Ancient Greek Epinetron

When it comes to decorated pottery from the world of ancient Greece, most of us can call to mind painted urns that show men exercising, drinking and philosophising. But it can sometimes feel that the world of women at this time is harder to uncover: how they lived, marked the transitional phases of their lives, worked and formed communities. In this episode of A Closer Look, archaeologist Dr Kristen Mann joins Dr Kathleen Olive to discuss an epinetron in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Painted by the celebrated Eretria Painter, it is connected to women’s role in the wool working industry, and to a formative stage in a young woman’s life.
