A Closer Look: Episode 6 - Paul Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire with a Large Pine Tree

Both Matisse and Picasso are credited with proclaiming, "Cézanne is the father of us all!" Born in the south of France, Cézanne spent a significant period of his career in Paris, learning an academic style but going on to reject it almost completely. His return to the south, with its distinctive light and dramatic landscapes around Aix-en-Provence, marks a key moment in his artistic trajectory.

In this episode of A Closer Look, Dr Nick Gordon examines Cézanne's "Mont Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine Tree." Today, you'll find the painting in London's Courtauld Institute of Art, and it's a perfect exemplar of the artistic vision, approach to perspective and use of colour, tone and brushwork that make Cézanne an enduring modern master.
